Room Building Blitz - Water Theme!

Cowabunga, it's almost summer and the time is so right for a water themed room contest.

You've got the talent, the mad skills, the judgement, but can you bring them all to bear in just 90 minutes?

Blitz is a chess term for a game that is fast and furious and the winner is decided in moments.

This Saturday, June 5th, we will have a Room Building Blitz and the winners will be known in just 90 minutes.

Here's the blazing blitz schedule (all times are Pacific Time in the afternoon)

• At 3:30 you enter your room in the contest, any furni in the room is automatically stored.
• At 3:31 you start building and you have 45 nail biting minutes to create your masterpiece.
• At 4:15 your room locks automatically and your masterpiece is complete.
• At 4:16 you start judging, select Judge Rooms from the Menu.
• At 4:45 judging is complete and you drop your smoking mouse!
• At 5:00 winners are announced and prizes awarded!

VFK Memorial Day Mini-Quest!

Today is Memorial Day, a day of remembrance for those who have fallen in service to our nation. This National holiday began on May 5th, 1868. Army General John Logan is attributed with originating this holiday soon after the American War Between the States. General Logan initially set it to be held on May 30th each year. We didn't begin recognizing Memorial Day on the last Monday in May, until 1971. Today, May 30th, 2010, the 94th Indianapolis 500 race is scheduled to take place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS). This marks the second race of the IMS's three year long Centennial era which celebrates the 100th anniversary of the opening of the speedway and the 100th anniversary of the first Indy 500. The IMS began in 1906 and is considered to be one of the worldwide leaders in motorsports. Rules for Racing - Anniversary Celebration - Opening Motor Sports Practice Day!

1. Walk to the Open Road map.

2. Enter the Race Way.

3. Click on your character, and double click on your Car pin. When your car appears, get in to your car.

4. If there is a race waiting to start, click on the Join Race button. If a race is not started, click on the New Race button.

5. If you have joined a race, wait for the count down for the race to start.

6. If you are the game owner, click the Start Race button when you are ready.

7. Watch for the count down, and start racing!

Make sure to race the entire course, as cutting across the open areas will result in your lap and score not being counted!

Watch for scores to be periodically updated on the home page!

Garden Room Competition Judging!

Our judges have completed their first review of the amazing creations for the Garden Rooms Design Competition! What they have discovered are designs that are so hot it is impossible to choose just one winner. So they have asked that we make the judging a community event!

That means all you great Garden Designers can now put your judging skills to the test.

All you have to do to start judging is check under the Menu and select the Judging option!

Our Furni Designers have also created special awards you will receive as you judge the exciting Garden Designs.

How does the Judging work?

You will be assigned a room to judge at random.

You will not be assigned your own design to judge.

The maximum number of rooms you can judge is limited to only 200.

Every time you complete the judging of 50 rooms, you will be awarded one of the special judging awards. All judging awards will be distributed Thursday, May 27th, 2010.

After you enter a Garden to be judged, your judging/rating tool will activate after 30 seconds.

In the final analysis, the ratings you give a room will be weighted based on how high your design is scored by other judges. If your design is getting all 10's, then your judging will be given more weight than if you were getting all 1's!

As an extra bonus, the judge whose actual ratings are closest to the final scores of the assigned Gardens will receive the Best Garden Judge Award!

All judging must be completed by Wednesday, May 26th, 2010 at 10:00 P.M. Pacific Time.

VFK Memorial Day Weekend Racing Extravaganza!

It's almost summer, and time to get your car ready for the Open Road!

May has always been a great month for Auto Racing! This year will be the 94th running of the Indianapolis 500, one of the oldest motor racing events in the world. This year's Indy 500 will occur on Sunday, May 30th.

As part of our celebration of the sport of Motor Racing we have a full schedule of events starting Saturday, May 22nd.

We have been busy building a new race course just for our celebration which you will find on the Open Roads map beginning Saturday, May 22nd, 2010, which will be our opening day for motor sports practice.

There are special awards and enhancements for your autos as part of the racing events.

Remember if you walk to the Open Roads areas you can always use the auto retrieve function to bring your car to you. Just double click your car pin and your car will arrive shortly.

Rules of the road are comprised of the procedures and practices that road traffic must follow. The rules most often govern all users of the road, but are particularly important to cyclists and motorists. In addition, these rules outline the interactions of vehicles with pedestrians. As cars became more popular, the local cities and towns developed these rules to reduce accidents and increase safety for everyone. For the seventh day of our epic quest for Transportation, we will look at the history of the Rules of the Road!

VFK Transportation Epic Quest Day 6 - Gas & Service Stations!

5:00 P.M. Pacific Time, Sunday, November 15th, 2009.

In 1900, there were only 4,000 cars in the US. In comparison, there were 20 million horses. The buildings and resources such as stables and blacksmith shops that supported horse drawn transportation have given way to gas stations and auto repair shops. In the meantime, the transition from the horse to the "horseless carriage" has been an amazing one. For the sixth day of our epic quest for Transportation, we will look at the colorful and exciting history of the gas station!

Mars, the fourth planet from the sun, has long captured our imagination. The distinctive reddish color has been seen by observers since ancient times. In honor of their god of war, the Romans named the planet Mars. The ancient Egyptians called it "Her Descher" which means "the red one." It is also referred to by its similar nickname, "The Red Planet." Early astronomers saw what they believed to be canals crisscrossing the surface which gave rise to the belief that Mars was inhabited by intelligent beings. So why is Mars red, what are the canals, and are men really from Mars? For the fifth day of our epic quest for Space Enchantment, we will look at the beautiful and mysterious planet Mars.

VFK Roswell Incident Quest!

7:00 A.M. Pacific Time Sunday, May 17th, 2009 to 10:00 P.M. Pacific Time Monday, May 18th, 2009.

Almost sixty-two years ago, an "incident" took place in the desert on a remote ranch northwest of Roswell, New Mexico. A press release by the US military of Roswell Army Air Field was issued on the morning of July 8, 1947. It stated that "the wreckage of a crashed disk (UFO) had been recovered." The press release was sent over the wire services in time to make the afternoon edition of over thirty newspapers. After only hours, a second press release from the Fort Worth Army Air Field in Texas rescinded the first press release and claimed that the debris was from a weather balloon and its radar reflector. At the time, the public accepted the weather balloon story and the incident quietly disappeared. It has been cloaked in secrecy ever since. On today's quest, we will investigate the history of the Roswell "incident" and look into why the incident came back into the public eye, and what data is available surrounding the crashed UFO in Roswell, NM.

Member's Gifts

Macaws are the members' gift for this month. These friendly birds, originally from Mexico and Central and South America are the largest members of the parrot family. They make fun, affectionate pets and love attention from their owners.

Macaws are highly intelligent and with a little patience, you can even teach your Macaw to talk. Your Macaw already knows how to say a few words. To teach it to say more things, simply say your Macaw's name, followed by a word or phrase you want it to learn. If you repeat it enough times, your bird will learn to say it. For instance if your parrot is named Polly, and you wanted to teach it to say that it wants a cracker, you would say "Polly, Polly wants a cracker."

You can also teach your parrot to respond to a phrase, for instance when someone says "Hi" and you want your parrot to respond, "Hello! How are you?" You would say, "Polly, Hi say Hello! How are you?" Or, if someone says "Who's a pretty birdy" and you want your parrot to respond "I am!! -hugs-" Just say "Polly, Who's a pretty birdy? say I am!! -hugs-" Remember you'll have to say what you want your parrot to learn a number of times before it will learn it. (Also, remember you are responsible for what your bird says, so be sure to follow the Constitution.)

To ask your parrot to unlearn a sentence he has been taught, say:

Polly you are getting sleepy forget

and then the sentence you want him to forget. You only need to ask your parrot once to forget something.

For example, let's say your parrot's name is Polly, and you have taught your parrot to say "I want a cracker". To ask your parrot to forget that sentence, you would say:

Polly you are getting sleepy forget I want a cracker

Remember you should type the sentence which your bird has learned exactly.

To ask your parrot to forget everything it has learned, say:

Polly you are getting sleepy forget forget forget

Be very careful when using "Polly you are getting sleepy forget forget forget", because your parrot will forget EVERYTHING it has learned. Remember, you only need to ask your parrot once to forget something.

You have four species of Macaws from which to choose: Military (green), Blue and Yellow (blue with yellow markings), Scarlet (red), and Hyacinth (blue). You will need to go and pick out your favorite Macaw in the Gift Shoppe on Main Street in Victorian Age. Macaws will be available starting Thursday, February 12th, 2009.

Wild Wild West Checkers

Object of the Game
Checkers is a two player board game where each player moves in turn. The object of the game is to capture your opponent’s pieces or move your pieces to block your opponent from making a legal move. You must move on your turn. The first player who can no longer move because their pieces are blocked or because all their pieces have been captured, loses the game.

Playing Board
The square checker board is divided into 64 squares. The squares are colored red and tan alternatively in the classic "checkerboard" pattern. Play is only on the green squares.

Moving
You start with twelve checkers colored either red or blue. Pieces are placed on the green squares on the board. The red player goes first and moves the red checkers. The blue player goes second and moves the blue checkers. A piece which is not a king can move diagonally forward one square. A king can move forward or backward. Pieces either regular or a king can only move to an unoccupied square. A move can also consist of jumps.

Jumping:
An opponent's piece or king can be captured by jumping,

If your opponent's checker or king blocks your movement and there is an open space beyond it on that diagonal line in the next row, you must jump that piece. You can not jump over your own pieces.

A regular piece can make a single jump only diagonally forward. A king can make a single jump diagonally forward or backward. For multiple jumps, a piece or king can change directions, first jumping diagonally one direction then another, jumping one piece at a time. You can not jump over a piece twice. You cannot stop part way through a multiple jump, but must jump all the options available. A regular piece or a king can jump a king.

If you have more than one option to jump, you can choose the one you want. There is no requirement that you must chose a particular path based on the number and kind of pieces which can be taken.

If you jump your opponent’s piece and the space you land on has the option of jumping an additional piece, you are required to jump and capture the additional piece.

Kings
Once a piece reaches the other side, (the crownhead) of the board, it becomes a king. A king is able to move forward or backward diagonally and can jump. When your piece reaches the crownhead, it becomes a king and your turn is over. Even if you could continue and make another jump, your turn ends.

Time Limit
The time limit for your move is one minute. If you do not move your piece within the one minute time limit, you forfeit the game.

Checker Rooms
Checker rooms are available upstairs in the Mercantile. If a game is in progress in a room, either the "way out" on the right side of the room or the left side of the room will take you to another checker room.

Twilight Enchantment Epic Quest Day 1

Starts 7:00 AM, Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Twilight, or the period just after sunset when the soft light is fading away to darkness has long been considered a magical time. It marks the time when the world "transforms" from day to night, and is symbolic in oral traditions of any kind of complete change.

Today we will embark on a 7 day epic quest to be able to assume the form of an animal shape. Ancient and indigenous cultures believe in "shape-shifting." Australian aboriginal elders are said to have the ability to shape-shift, and it is fundamental to the dreamtime foundations of their beliefs.

With Twilight enchantment, we will be able to "magically" assume the form of animals from birds in the air to creatures below the sea and a wide range of animals in-between.

The first animal that comes with your Twilight Enchantment will be the Wolf. With your Twilight Enchantment, you will be able to aquire additional wildlife shapes, as they become available.

Since October is also Halloween month, we will be finding out about the animals that are most closely associated with Halloween.

The Twilight Enchantment Epic Quest will be available throughout October. You can begin the quest anytime you wish during the end of this month and at anytime during October, and upon completion you will receive your Twilight Enchantment.

This first quest includes a reward of 1,000 credits and the first Twilight Enchantment pin, the Wolf Pin! As you complete each stage of this Epic Quest, you will receive a unique reward and the next Twilight Pin.

Each day you can complete the next step in the Epic Quest, receiving your new rewards and progressing towards enchantment.

Merfolk Enchantment Epic Quest Day 1

Starts 7:00 AM, Sunday, September 7th, 2008

The oceans have always fascinated mankind. Throughout history there have been many fantastic tales and stories to explain the natural movements and migrations of the currents and the creatures beneath the waves. So many creatures dwell under the ocean's surface that we are still discovering mysteries that the watery depths conceal.

But among all the tales and stories told of the ocean in all of history, one of the most beloved legends is that of the Merfolk.

Merfolk have now come to our world and each of us will have the opportunity to experience the wonders of the depths of the ocean that defines the legends surrounding merfolk lore.

However, some things in life can not be bought with gold or silver, but must instead be earned. This is true for the enchantment which makes experiencing the awe and mystery of merfolk possible.

To obtain this enchantment we have created an Epic Quest which will be available throughout September. You can begin the quest anytime you wish during this month and upon completion you will receive your Merfolk Enchantment.

There are seven quests, each with a unique reward, some of which will be needed for the next step in your journey. The first quest includes a reward of 1,000 credits and the first Merfolk Enchantment pin, the Ocean Pin! As each quest is completed, you will receive a unique reward and the next Merfolk Pin.

Each day you can complete the next step in the Epic Quest, receiving your new rewards and progressing towards enchantment.

Upon completion of the Epic Quest your reward will be Merfolk Enchantment. This enchantment also comes with a merfolk room which opens onto an underwater world. There is also a shop where you can get merfolk clothes!

The merfolk enchantment lasts as long as you wish and you can start and end it at any time.

Legends in History Month, How to Become "Fairy Enchanted"

August, 2008

Note: You can begin your quest for Fairy Enchantment at anytime during the month of August, and you can finish the quest at anytime during the month of September.

Legends spring from a time which may predate even the earliest recorded history. They tell of peoples and places which are difficult to even imagine in our present world. However, these legends were very real to our ancestors and played a significant part in their culture and beliefs.

Fairies are now a part of our world and each of us has the opportunity to experience the wonders of flight and fancy that define the legends surrounding fairy lore.

To become fairy enchanted, you must embark on an Epic Quest which will be available throughout August. You can begin the quest anytime you wish during this month and upon completion you will receive your fairy enchantment.

The Seven Quests to Fairy Enchantment:

Day One - Legends in History
The first quest about Legends in History includes a reward of 1,000 credits and the first Legend Pin the Sword in the Stone pin.

Day Two - Dragon Lore
Your epic journey continues the next day with the second quest! This quest seeks to discover a knowledge of dragons in legend and lore.
Your reward for completing this quest is 1,000 credits and the second pin in the Legends in History Collection, the Knight’s Shield pin.

Day Three - Merlin the Magician
Our epic journey continues with our third quest! This quest seeks to explore the legends and history behind 'Merlin the Magician'!
Your reward for completing this quest is 1,000 credits and the third pin in the Legends in History Collection, the Dragon Pin!

Day Four - The Mystical Unicorn
The fourth day of your epic quest for fairy enchantment centers around one of the most beloved legendary animals of all time, the Unicorn!
Your reward for completing this quest is 1,000 credits and the fourth pin in the Legends in History Collection, the Unicorn Pin!

Day Five - Sea Monsters, Legends of the Deep
The fifth day of your epic quest for fairy enchantment seeks to explore the depths of the ocean, and delve into the history of some of the most interesting legendary sea creatures!
Your reward for completing this quest is 1,000 credits and the fifth pin in the Legends in History Collection, the Sea Monster Pin!

Day Six - The Elusive Mermaid
The sixth day of your epic quest for fairy enchantment explores some of the history behind one of the most popular legends of the sea, mermaids!
Your reward for completing this quest is 1,000 credits and the sixth pin in the Legends in History Collection, the Mermaid Pin!

Day Seven - Fairy Enchanted
This final day of your epic quest for fairy enchantment unearths some of the history behind one of the most interesting stories of recent times, The Cottingley Fairies!
Your reward for completing this quest is 1,000 credits and the seventh pin in the Legends in History Collection, the Fairy Pin!

Upon completion of this final quest, you will become fairy enchanted! Welcome to Fairy World!
